Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant | Eight Egg-shaped Digesters

Brooklyn, New York

2006 Outstanding Infrastructure Project

Commissioned by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, Cruz Concrete was a sub-contractor to the Pegno-Tully JV. Eight egg-shaped waste digesters were planned to renovate this wastewater treatment plant where infrastructure was in need of repair and renovation. The digesters are lined with 6” thick shotcrete, applied by Cruz.

Today, the digester eggs can easily be seen at night, light up with blue light, from vantage points in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. The eggs also serve as a backdrop for neighborhood groups working to restore, reveal and revitalize the ecological systems along the Newtown Creek with green infrastructure.
